With school in full swing it's been hard to post a video of my own in a while. The M.A.D. project is in full swing, though I have been having video conversion issues as of late, so I haven't been able to shoot at all.

It's been a little over a year since I started this site and certainly after a mark like this it's hard not to look back.
To mark the occasion I would like to create a little project involving the concept of making a difference, and other video bloggers out there.

Since I set out to do this whole vlog thing I've thought a lot about why I do it. My goals for the site have flip flopped a lot over this past year. One thing that has remained constant is that I have always wanted to remind viewers of some of the few things that are important in life. Things that I have noticed in my life to slip under the cracks from time to time. Things like the ability to simply love what you do. To work hard, and try new things, to not get trapped in ones own head and simply live life from the outside, to go for a hike. To take the time to listen, to breathe. Now I want to take that to a bigger realm.
I'm opening up the stage to you all. I want to know how you make a difference.
The way it will work is simple. You send me an idea for how to make a difference. I make a video on that idea, while at the same time you create your version. When I revcieve the link to the video I will post them as a pair.

The summer draws to a close, one of the hardest summers I've had. While I was in one of the city that never sleeps I was able to get away from the hussle and bussle and step back from it all, not only the city but the past 6 weeks as well. I then bid the city farewell, but not without saying farewell to some of my own baggage.

Don't forget to sometimes step back and breathe.

While visiting Boston my car was broken into. I didn't mind the stereo being stolen, it's just a stereo. But when Ashley tried to put the key in the ignition there was something broken off in it. Turns out they tried to steal my car with a flat-headed screw driver.

So my poor busted car had to get towed, here is the story.

During a visit to my friends house he took me took me to a skate park where he taught me the basics to skateboarding. I figured "hey, it can't be that hard can it?"

After many falls I can at least say that I tried something new.

I went down to Grand Cayman Island for a week with my biology teacher to study coral reef biology. There I was asked to be an unofficial photographer, though I must say I wasn't even thinking about that, more to the fact that I was BREATHING UNDER WATER...
I was nervous about shooting underwater with Black and White, but I think they turned out alright.

Transom offers tools and advice to help people tell their stories, but does not presume to suggest what those stories might be about. This new piece by Katie and Nubar is an audio-visual self-interview around the question: "What would you do if somebody told you to make a movie about your life?" It ponders this from the vantage point of being twenty-one years old, the age that, by law in this country, we are loosed upon the world and may be expected to answer for ourselves.

My Art

For the past three years I have been a struggling artist wading through the fog of a liberal arts education. I dove into everything from theatre, dance, literature, science, sculpture, music, and photography. The whole time knowing that I can do all these things but not to a degree that is satisfying. Now in my junior year here at Bennington I have a heavy burden to produce work for the senior show, to have a grounded foot in my art. To have a grounded foot in art means to have a grounded perspective of the world around me. And that for a 20 year old college student is quite near impossible as far as I'm concerned. Or at least that's just how I feel.
I just recently discovered the historical processes in photography. Through these processes I have gained an understanding of what photography is really all about. Now of course anybody could say that it is all in the eye of the beholder, but I think that's a load of crap. I think that quite simply, art (weather it be dance, sculpture, theatre, painting, or writing) is an articulation.
This is what I love about art. I am starting to realize that I am quite a simpleton, and I continue to go through the world bringing it to its simplest form. Which is why I am so interested in these processes in photography. I realize that these processes are raw, uninhibited. To me they produce images that are closer to the truth of what the world looks like than any other modern film or paper.

Response to Gas Prices

As a poor college student booming gas prices are a down right pain in the ass. So what does one poor student do? Or anybody for that matter? Well, there are many routs, but I decided to acquire a bike. I found one that didn't belong to anybody in the basement of the house I am living in. I got it fixed up, and now I am gas free. Sure it cost money to fix it, but in my mind I'm not only getting off my fat ass, and getting some exercise, but I am feeling good about it.

In my opinion the gas price boom is, in large part, due to panic. And I chose not to support it. I think when gas companies can price their gas in relation to the actual supply and demand of the country and stop profiteering than I will decide to support them, but until then. I just have to make sure I leave for class a few minutes earlier than I would normaly.

I finally was able to get to get my film developed from the summer. So you all are the first to see my latest work. This is from the 4th of July, before a storm came in.
I was having a hard time finding some good opportunities for shooting, nothing was appealing to me. While I was cleaning off the beach I noticed how beautiful it was that this storm was rolling through. I ran back to the camp sight and grabbed my camera.

This is my first time working with people in such a formal way. For my lighting class I decided to do studio portraiture, and this was also a first. I had never set foot in a studio to do a project for myself.
I noticed that this project's simplicity was more of a response to what my classmates were doing. Everybody was trying to come up with the most original idea, and that was most of the time very complicated; extravagant plot's, complicated lighting, so on and so forth. I decided to go with something a bit simpler. Oddly enough this is the story of most of my photography. I'm quite tired of creating complicated pieces. Not that there is anything wrong with that. But I am at a stage where I am trying to get at the core of, well everything. So with my subjects I was trying to get them without posing them, so everything you see here was a posture that the subjects discovered for themselves, although I would pose them initially (first 2 rolls of film) to get them comfortable. But eventually they got comfortable and experimented for themselves.

This is a Colodian glass negative portrait of me. This plate was slightly under exposed to create what is called an ambrotype. When put behind a black surface this negative becomes a positive.

This is Ashley sitting on a porch. This was my very first historical process print. It's modern day film printed on Albumen. Albumen is a process that relies on egg white to bond the light sensitive chemicals to the paper. Today they use gelatin. But back then I guess they weren't that smart...

This is from a series of Colodian glass plate negatives I produced while at school. This is a pair of Birch Trees outside the science building at Bennington.
The glass plate was printed as a cyanotype, which is the same type of process architects use to print out blueprints. Although Cyanotypes are usualy far more blue, I toned this image with something I can't remember, but it brought it closer to a brown.
